Léon Spilliaert ¿ Interiors & Still Lifes

A modest but essential part of Spilliaert’s oeuvre consists of his interiors and still lifes. These intimate compositions reveal the depth of his vision, as well as his exceptional ability to transform everyday spaces into places of contemplation. Empty rooms, familiar corners and simple objects are rendered with austere clarity, yet carry an intense, almost tangible presence – despite the absence of human figures. Silence reigns in these works. This richly illustrated publication brings together new essays by leading Spilliaert scholars, each casting fresh light – from within their own field of research – on the genesis of this exceptional body of work by the Ostend artist.
